<image:title>Our Pastor - Rev. Debra McKnight</image:title>
<image:caption>Rev. Debra McKnight, MEd, MDiv, is the founding pastor of Urban Abbey. Rev. Debra is passionate about connecting with the people and helping them grow in their faith. An advocate for social justice, women’s rights, and the LGBTQ+ community, she seeks to heal the wounds created by conservative Christianity. Her vivacious, warm personality fuels her ability to influence people in positive and healthy ways. Before attending seminary, Rev. Debra lived and worked in Germany as an education counselor for active duty military personnel. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska, a Master of Education degree from Doane College, and in 2008 she received a Master of Divinity degree from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. While serving as an Associate Pastor at First United Methodist Church of Omaha, Rev. Debra created a spiritual gathering for young adults called Wesley Pub. Participants brought beverages of their choice and discussed spirituality, social justice, and more. Wesley Pub was so successful, she decided to expand the gatherings into a venue for all ages … and the idea for the Urban Abbey coffee shop/bookstore/church was born. Since 2011, Urban Abbey has been offering a safe space for the community to connect with and learn from one another. During an era in which attendance at mainline protestant churches in the United States has declined, Urban Abbey has succeeded as a new church and is continually growing. In 2020, Rev. Debra founded the Urban Abbot, an organization dedicated to helping pastors along their spiritual journey or who are interested in planting a new church.</image:caption>

<image:title>Campus Ministry - Urban Abbey is an inclusive space for students to study and for community members to gather. Their commitment to Omaha is apparent in their support of local non-profit partners each month. I accidentally found the Abbey when looking for a place to study, however, the friendliness of the staff and their continued commitment to the community have kept me coming back.</image:title>

<image:title>Sarah Bio - Sarah Comer (She/Her)</image:title>
<image:caption>Sarah Comer (she/her) brings a mix of nonprofit know-how, theological curiosity, and deep love for community to the Urban Abbey team. A Nebraska native, Sarah grew up in Lincoln and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Classics and Religious Studies from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 2009. After college, Sarah served as a youth director at a small United Methodist church in southeastern Kansas and began discerning a call to ministry. That path took her to the Iliff School of Theology in Denver in 2011, where she eventually shifted focus and earned a Master of Arts in Social Justice and Ethics in 2013. She returned home to Nebraska with a clear calling to serve people at the intersection of faith, justice, and practical care. Returning to Nebraska, Sarah spent more than seven years working in hunger relief at the Food Bank of Lincoln and the Food Bank for the Heartland. Her work included food assistance outreach, partner support and management, federal contracts and grant administration, government compliance, education, quality control, and data analysis. This experience continues to ground her ministry in real systems, real needs, and the behind-the-scenes work that helps communities thrive. She brings that same systems-savvy, people-first energy into her ministry work today. Sarah joined the Urban Abbey team in the summer of 2021 and works closely with Rev. Debra across campus and young adult ministry, children’s and youth programming, and adult formation. She also supports the Abbey behind the scenes through data management, grant writing, fund management, and church administration. Her favorite part of the job is helping create a progressive United Methodist community where justice, creativity, and belonging are taken seriously—and joy is never optional. Outside of the Abbey, Sarah loves spending time with her boyfriend, planning very well-organized road trips (she is an Enneagram 6, after all), reading romantasy novels, baking along with The Great British Bake Off, and cuddling her cat Hazel. If you’re new to Urban Abbey, Sarah hopes you feel free to come as you are—curious, skeptical, hopeful, or tired—and trusts you’ll find a table with room for you here.</image:caption>

<image:caption>There is power in small groups. After all, 12 disciples changed the religious landscape of our world. In Urban Abbey Small Groups, we get to know one another and dig more deeply into the spiritual and theological topics that we are exploring in worship. <image:title>Spiritual Formation - SOCIAL JUSTICE TEAM</image:title>
<image:caption>John Wesley said, “There is no holiness without social holiness.” Which means faith involves action. At Urban Abbey we believe the world should be different and the gift is we don’t have to do it alone. We believe in working with non-profit partners and are humble enough to acknowledge they usually know more about the work than the church, and we are focused enough on change that we don’t need to have credit. This work is bigger than we are. Partnering is powerful, we listen and work with powerful organizations doing the work of advocacy and social justice well. We believe in presence over projects. Our primary partners in this work are ACLU of Nebraska, Strongly Worded Letters, Nebraska Appleseed, Women’s Fund of Omaha, & OutNebraska. We co-host events and book studies, join rallies, organize for collective action, collect signatures on petitions, write letters, train people on how to understand local government, show up for our partners and testify at the places of power. We teach classes, including our Legislative Briefing Day that is open to all who want to learn more and do more at the local level. Additionally, we host an annual Youth Lobby Day where families and youths can participate in direct social justice at the Nebraska State Capitol! Families and youths meet senators, take tours of the Capitol, and write letters/postcards about issues they care about. Be sure to look for our upcoming 2026 Youth Lobby Day!</image:caption>

<image:title>Spiritual Formation - RULE OF LIFE COHORT</image:title>
<image:caption>Early Abbeys had a Rule of Life and that may sound a little intense but it’s really about a rhythm that helps us be our best selves so we can be a just and loving community. Once a year a cohort of 12 folks dive into creating their own rule of life. We are a United Methodist Church and the membership vows mean something, if we make them. But Prayer…is pretty big and can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people, some folks like centering prayer and some just fall asleep, EVERY TIME. Through the Urban Abbey curriculum and skilled facilitators; each person determines what the Methodist commitment of Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service and Witness means to them right now. This group requires deep commitment to have a deep impact and folks are invited after participation in the life of the church, Grow Nights, Worship and small groups. Facilitators are Seanne and Jane Read more about Rule of Life here!</image:caption>

<image:title>Spiritual Formation - SOUL ARTS</image:title>
<image:caption>Our world invites left-brain analytic thinking to predominate our day. Soul art allows our right-brain creative expression to bring balance to life. Through drawing, painting, weaving, sculpting, writing, sewing, crafting (whatever your medium), you can allow wisdom to flow and get ‘unstuck.’ Our subconscious attempts to present to us a wealth of information, wisdom and healing. This occurs one way in our sleeping dream world, but it also can pour forth when we engage our creative brain and allow messages and meaning to flow. Rev. Dr. Jane Florence leads a variety of near-monthly gatherings to enrich and expand your spiritual journey. From the sound baths and singing bowls to Mandala meditations and Labyrinth creation, you are invited into a safe place to explore. Check our events for what adventure is happening this month. <image:title>Spiritual Formation - THE HYGGE SESSIONS</image:title>
<image:caption>Hygge (HOO-Gah) is the Danish practice of coziness and in initiation to intentional living. Every January we invite community to explore this practice in a small group with Facilitation by Lindsay VanZee and Urban Abbey's five chapter devotion. This session happens on Zoom so everyone can join from where ever they are and no matter the weather. It is an invitation to discover the beauty of hygge (HOO-Gah) as a spiritual practice. We will look at incorporating aspects of hygge into your life as a way to find meaningful moments in the simplicity of everyday moments and spaces. Hygge invites folks to love life and when we love our lives and ourselves with out wishing the season was summer; when we can love ourselves we can love our community better, too.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Join Urban Abbey to explore Matthias Roberts’ personal and professional insights into struggling with religious/spiritual harm. This very small group is a space to process the stories shared in Holy Runaways and personal experiences of group members. This safe space is crafted with intentional boundaries for listening and sharing, a very small group size, and skilled facilitators. Desirae Vallier, M.S., LMHC, CRC is our group facilitator. This group is offered three times a year. This is not a support group. We, at Urban Abbey, encourage folks to see trained therapists (like for everyone and everything). This group is an invitation to anyone in the community. You do not need to be a part of the Urban Abbey community. There is no pressure or intention that folks participating in this gathering become members or a part of the Urban Abbey community. <image:title>Liberty Elementary Volunteering - Why Volunteer at Liberty?</image:title>
<image:caption>”Attending worship service at Urban Abbey, we hear phrases like “how will we be bread for others”, “how will you show up this week”, and “it’s not how well you say the Lord’s Prayer but how well you live it.” I take those thoughts to heart and am continually challenged by them. When I give time and resources to Liberty, I feel that in a small but important way I am living out the prayer. I feel good about supporting teachers and staff. I feel good about being an advocate for public education. I feel good about being a positive contributor to young people’s future. The best part is I get to do this with Kathy, an educator herself and my life partner. Kathy and I feel privileged to provide gift certificates for the principal’s weekly drawing, and look forward to bringing others in to help fund this program of teacher recognition into the future. It is a joy to spend time with Kathy shelving books in the library, alternating weeks with fellow Urban Abbey members Jack and Nancy Armitage. Those two hours each week by each couple is a relatively small effort but hugely appreciated by the school.” — Jim & Kathy Morely</image:caption>

<image:title>Liberty Elementary Volunteering - Make a Difference!</image:title>
<image:caption>I volunteer at Liberty because it keeps me around younger kids. My children are all adults and I currently work with middle school aged students. There is something wonderful about how younger children see the world. I love having the opportunity to experience that sense of wonder and see through the eyes of a child. I also love sharing the unconditional acceptance that my therapy dog, Odin gives. He takes kids as they are and he doesn’t care what they can’t do. Many kids have experienced trauma, bullying, may struggle academically or behaviorally and having the opportunity to be loved by a big, fluffy dog brings smiles. I especially enjoy when a student tells me that Odin likes them, and, of course, I always agree. Even for students that don’t directly interact with Odin due to fear, religious reasons, or because they choose not to, it still holds a valuable lesson that their voices are heard and their choices are valued. It gives the students power over what happens to them and for some, it may b the only time. Odin not only visits the students, but also the staff. Sometimes his presence is needed by the adults more than the kids. Education is not easy, but volunteers can help. In order to make the world a better place, it takes all of us. A little time can make a big difference. Seeing smiles and knowing that you helped put them on faces is worth it! — Mako Jacobs</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tori has copious barista experience (and still can't do decent latte art), and has previously been a youth sponsor at her Texas church for the last four years. She graduated from Texas Tech University with her BA in English, Literature and Language, with a minor in Nutrition. Outside of her work with the Abbey, Tori (she/her) loves to snuggle her pups: Sebastian, a Great Pyrenees and Percy, a Bernese Mountain Dog; spend time with her husband, Jackson (he/him), gardening, hiking, camping, and singing while he plays the piano; reading any sort of romance novel, knitting, and practicing yoga. Tori possesses an intense desire for social justice and equity, destigmatizing mental health, pursuing equality in the church, and learning more about women's religious history (the saints are very cool).</image:caption>
